10 meter – WA2QAV took the net this week. There were only a few check ins. N2MUN plans to have the students in his Tech class listen to this net and practice check ins.

Swap n Shop – WA2QAV took the net this week. There were 6-7 check ins, and some traffic. The equipment from K2EAX (SK) was sold via the Compass, not on the net. WA2QAV suggested that club members should get the first shot at equipment from Silent Keys. The board agreed with this. This is the way it has been done.

EDUCATION: The technician class started this past Tuesday. There are 7 Boy Scouts and 3 adults in the class. N2MUN plans to have more hands on training as part of the class. The extra class started on Wednesday and has 4 students. Both classes should be  ready for the tests in October. N2MUN has ordered additional books for the technician class.

GUEST SPEAKERS & PROGRAMS:
Sept – K2TAT will give a presentation on the early days of radio. All members are encouraged to bring mementos. The business meeting will be held after this presentation.

CLUB STATION & EQUIPMENT: KA2RGI reports there is nothing new. He is still looking for an ops manual for the club’s 430. Discussion followed.

LIBRARY: WA2UJI says there is nothing new.

APPAREL: KC2EGK presented information about getting light Fall jackets. Embroidered jackets would cost about $75.  Discussion followed. KC2EGK and N2MUN will visit the apparel store tomorrow..

The 440 repeater is working well.
The 220 repeater is being re-worked by K2TV. The 220 and 440 repeaters will probably be located at the town hall with backup at Good Sam hospital.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: Skywarn training will be held on Oct. 1 at Brookhaven Labs. Section Manager N2GA ran unopposed for re-election so he will continue in this position for another 2 years.

OTHER BUSINESS: The local DX cluster is being taken over by KA2D. He will have 2 meter, 220, and 440 equipment at his QTH. To purchase this equipment from N2TX, Mike,  will cost about $500. Discussion followed. There would be several advantages for GSBARC to be the sponsor of this cluster, and the club’s visibility would be increased. Tom suggests this be presented at the next general meeting to see if the membership wants to do this. The cluster would have the call sign of W2GSB. Donations could be solicited to offset the club’s expense of purchasing this equipment and the software ownership transfer cost. Following discussion, K2LI made a motion to present this purchase to the membership and recommend it’s approval. The motion was seconded by KA2RGI. Following a vote, this motion was approved by the board.

A motion to adjourn was made by KA2RGI and seconded by N2MIG.  Meeting was adjourned at 9:00PM

Great South Bay Amateur Radio Club
W2GSB DX-Cluster

Great South Bay ARC sponsors the W2GSB DX-Cluster node using AR-Cluster software. This node was formerly N2TX in Bay Shore, NY. The node, which comprises a Pentium computer, VHF Transceiver/TNC, was moved to the home of KA2D in Babylon, NY on September 30. Mike N2TX configured the hardware and software to connect to the DX Cluster network. On October 2, GSBARC received the W2GSB AR-Cluster software license and the node’s callsign was changed over from N2TX to W2GSB. GSBARC thanks Mike Anderson N2TX for his time and support.

Access to this node is via internet, telnet://24.187.239.170    or two meters on 145.670.

AR-Cluster online user manual [click here]

What is AR-Cluster?

AR-Cluster is a next-generation DX Cluster system based on 32-bit Windows platforms.  AR-Cluster features built-in Internet connectivity for connecting to other AR-Cluster nodes.  User connections are available using Telnet over the Internet or by TNC/RF devices.  AR-Cluster integrates easily into existing cluster networks.

What is a DX Cluster?

A DX Cluster is a network of connected amateur radio operators.  Users connect into a cluster, which generally serves a local region and clusters are linked together to form wider areas of coverage by geographical area such as state, country and even international level.  The result is a vast network of connected users sharing information pertaining to amateur radio.

Connections into a DX Clusters can be made using TNC/RF devices usually operating on VHF/UHF frequencies or Telnet using the Internet for connectivity.

Stations connecting into a cluster share amateur radio information including:

·          DX Spots

·          WWV Spots

·          Talk, Announcements, and Mail

·          Weather and Emergency Services

In addition DX Clusters offer general utilities for amateur operations such as:

·          Callsign Lookup Databases

·          QSL Databases

·          Great Circle Heading and Sunrise Sunset calculations

For the members who are not familiar with DX Cluster ask the members who use it.

CQWW Operating Tip #1 - Smaller Station Operating Strategies..
From Yankee Clipper Contest Club email reflector

Hello Gang

CQWW SSB is just three weeks away and it's time once again to pass along a
few operating tips for our smaller station members - in order to help them
maximize their scores during CQWW SSB.

None of the following suggestions carries the official "Underwriters Labs"
seal of approval, but you may find these ideas useful as you navigate the
bands during CQWW:

1) Don't get frustrated on Friday night with a low power station or smaller
antennas.  Work what you can in "search and pounce mode".  Don't waste too
much time in pileups you are not likely to break with L/P - just move on.

2) 20M and 40M will prove somewhat useful - 80M and 160M less so, especially
on Friday night.

3) If you feel like you are beating your head against the wall by about 06z,
it may be a good time to take a 3 hour nap and get yourself rested for the
GOOD MORNING Europe openings that will come on 20/15/10M as the sun comes up.

4) As the high bands open, work what you can on 20 and 15 - staying high in
the band if you wish to try a few CQ's to establish a run.

5) Recognize that 20M will be TOUGH - 15 less so - and move to 15 as soon as
it is "runnable".

6) Keep checking 10M - this is where you want to be all day long into Europe
- if it opens.  You can go HIGH in the band on 10M if it is wide open and
have some really good runs - if the band opens well on a direct path into
Europe.

7) The late afternoon pileups will be tough on Saturday.  If 10M is open,
focus a high percentage of your time there, but do check 15M and 20M now and
then.  You will need to do this to build a respectable multiplier count on 15
and 20 - but since the pileups will be larger on Saturday, come back SUNDAY
to work your mults if you find the going just too rough.  Those same
multi-multi's will still be there on Sunday and your chances of getting
through should be better.  Avoid huge packet pileups - these will probably be
very tough to crack with a modest station!

8) Saturday night will offer you BETTER chances to work the lowbands.  See
what you can do on 80M calling stuff.  Forget running on 75 and 160m.  Even
40M is really tough will L/P - so focus on calling things as you can - in
order to build your lowband multiplier totals as best you can.

9) Don't forget to work Zones 3,4 and 5 on all bands if you can.  Zone 3 on
Topband will be tough - as will be zone 2 - but never say never......!

10) If things really slow down on Sat night, go to bed again around 06/07Z
and get some sleep.  You will again do better on the highbands during the day
- it's axiomatic!

11) On Sunday morning, see if you can get a run going HIGH in the band on 15M
as the band opens.  I once got a good run on QRP two years ago up around
21.385, so anything is possible.....

12)  Go to 10M as soon as it is really open to Europe and milk it for all you
can - 10M is your MONEY BAND!

13) Work those afternoon multipliers as best you - the pileups will be a bit
smaller on Sunday making your chances a bit better to get through.

14) Try TAIL-ENDING in pileups - unless the operator on the other side
requests otherwise - you will find you can sometimes get your call across
before the ROAR begins.....

15) Recognize your limitations - but still have fun.

It's possible to score 1MEG with a modest station, 500K for sure - and you
will be helping YCCC out in a MAJOR WAY if you do.

Remember, YCCC's success has been largely achieved since 1998 through the
efforts of our smaller stations - we win if we get **all** our guys and gals
on - as those smaller scores really add up. (Don't think this is true? -
well, just ask FRC!!  They know how we are beating them.....)

Simply stated, we have MORE MEMBERS than FRC - so we can outlast FRC's
superstations and better ops (so they say - but I don't really believe that!)
by getting all our troopers on!

Wanna win this thing and complete the DRIVE FOR FIVE?

Then dust off your operating table and park yourself in the chair in three
weeks time.

Then watch the YCCC reflector as the scores of ur buddies start rolling in
and FRC's fortunes (again) go right down the proverbial  shi..er! (well you
know what....).

Have fun and let's KICK FRC's butt!!
Onward to the DRIVE FOR FIVE!!!
