Meet Congressman Steve Israel who will talk about "My father the ham and how I hope to solve his antenna problems

Congressman Steve Israel from the Second District of New York  will be speaking about a tower Bill he will be sponsoring. The meeting will be held at the  EOC Babylon Town Hall on Wednesday May 29 at 8:00 PM

Please Note our General meeting will take place on Thursday May 30 at 8:00PM and the subject will be Field Day.

This year Spin KC2EGK will again be our Field Day Coordinator, please give him the support he needs to make FD 2002 a great success. Spin is also our apparel person and has placed an T-shirt order for Field Day and the Fire Island Lighthouse . The T-shirts will be available at the General meeting to purchase them. Do not fear we will be placing an additional order in early June

 DUES : Dues renewal is $ 25.00 per year. Tom KA2D will be collecting dues at GSBARC meetings . You may also mail in your dues to the club PO Box. When renewing your  membership it is important to update any change of your personal information such as a new address, phone number, call sign, license class, ARRL membership, and e-mail address.  

CLUB APPAREL: KC2EGK has shirts and lightweight jackets than can be ordered with or without embroidered club logo, name or call sign. These items are available in various colors. Spin also has a supply of club hats and T shirts

TREASURER'S REPORT: N2MUN read the report from Tom KA2D.

 MEMBERSHIP: 127 Total   (107 full paid, 11 family, 9 complimentary) KA2D has prepared a list of members who still owe dues for 2002. This list will be turned over to N2MIG, membership chairman, to follow up. 

CORRESPONDENCE:
Several dues renewals, bank statement.

 NETS: 2 Meter -  WA2UJI was net control this week. The net is running well. 10 Meter – no report.Swap n Shop – No report.

 EDUCATION: Students in the Technician class will be ready to take the VE exam at the April session. The class is going well. The Extra class is going well too. KB2SIE is doing well as the instructor.N2MUN says most of the students in the class have expressed interest in becoming club members.

 GUEST SPEAKERS AND PROGRAMS:
April – KA2RGI will give a talk on repeaters and repeater operation. May – was supposed to be a discussion of field day, but may be a talk given by Congressman Steve Israel. (see Other Business below) 

COMPASS: The April Compass has been sent to N2GBM for copying and mailing. It was agreed that the Compass should be available to everyone before the General meeting.

 CLUB STATION & EQUIPMENT:
Equipment insurance premium is due next week. KA2D will send it in. KA2RGI says there is no new status on the club equipment. 

LIBRARY: WA2UJI reports nothing is new. 

APPAREL: KC2EGK says t-shirts for field day and lighthouse weekend are now available. Spin also has some club hats available.

 REPEATERS: The new tower is being worked on. Our equipment should be moved over within a month. KA2RGI says the Motorola equipment that the club was going to get is not available. KA2RGI would like to know if anyone is interested in learning about repeater equipment. There have not been too many people expressing interest so far. Discussion followed.

DX & CONTESTING: N2MUN presented some information on upcoming DX events.

 VE SESSIONS: N2MUN thanked everyone who helped at the last VE session. The next session will be April 28.

 ARES/RACES: This weekend will be the Suffolk County Half Marathon. KA2RGI gave details. Walter also described upcoming ARES events.

 HEALTH & WELFARE: The XYL of KA2D is ill.

 FIELD DAY 2002: Field Day chairman KC2EGK is concerned about the availability of equipment. Discussion followed. KA2RGI says he will be in charge of the food once again this year.

NEW BUSINESS: There will be a special event station set up at the Air Power Museum on June 8 & 9.On June 30, there will be an information table set up at the USPS picnic in Melville. KA2RGI is now the secretary for METRO COR. This group will be coordinating repeater frequency pair assignments. N2MUN says we should give METRO COR a check for $30 for dues to cover all 3 of the club’s repeaters.

 OTHER BUSINESS: N2MUN says Representative Steve Israel is going to sponsor a nationwide antenna bill. He would like to address a club meeting about this. Following discussion, it was decided that this could be done as the general meeting for May, and everyone interested could attend. KA2RGI will look into a suitable location. It is possible that 150-200 people could be expected, so planning needs to be  done.

 A motion to adjourn was made by KA2RGI and seconded by KC2EGK. The meeting was adjourned at 8:47 PM

OTHER CLUB MEMBERS PRESENT: All members and guests introduced themselves. New member Chris, KC2JCG, was welcomed.

MINUTES: Minutes of the previous meetings were accepted as printed in the Compass by K2LI and seconded by N2PIK.

TREASURER’S REPORT:KA2D reported the balances of the GSBARC accounts.

MEMBERSHIP: Currently 129 members. (109 full paid, 11 family, 9 complimentary) 

CORRESPONDENCE: QSL’s for K2U and Fire Island Lighthouse events, a QSL from KC2EGL, newsletters from Fire Island Lighthouse and Radio Central, several dues renewals.

 NETS: 2 Meter – running well, with usual items. N2MUN says he looks forward to when this net works on a good repeater someday.
10 Meter – No report. N2NGE was away on business. He hopes to pick the net up again next week.
Swap n Shop – due to KA2RGI’s work schedule, this net has not been on lately. N2MUN reminded members that they can always jump in as net control.

EDUCATION: N2MUN says the Technician class went very well. The students should be ready for the April VE session. At a recent class,  Phil and the students contacted club member KC2EGL in Pennsylvania on 40 meters. N2MUN will do a short General class starting in May for anyone interested. The Extra class, taught by KB2SIE is going well. The 2 students should be ready to upgrade at the May VE session.

GUEST SPEAKERS & PROGRAMS:
April – KA2RGI will give a talk on repeaters.
May – Representative Steve Israel will give a talk on the tower legislation bill he is introducing. The tentative date is Wednesday May 29. The location is yet to be announced. If this event is held on the 29th, there will be a regular general meeting on Thursday May 30, as usual. The topic will be Field Day.
June – Field Day results discussion

COMPASS: The Compass is now online. Hard copies are available at each general meeting. N2MUN says the appearance of the hard copy will be improved in May.

GSBARC WEB PAGE:The latest Compass is available. KA2D has corrected some outdated links.

CLUB STATION & EQUIPMENT: It is time to start checking out the equipment that will be needed for Field Day.

LIBRARY: WA2UJI reports there is nothing new at this time.

APPAREL: Club hats, as well as special t-shirts for Field Day and Lighthouse Weekend are available. In the absence of KC2EGK, these items can be purchased from WA2QAV. Bud listed the prices of each item as well as combination deals. 

REPEATERS: KA2RGI will speak tonight about the history of the club repeaters, their current condition, and plans for the future.  

DX & CONTESTING: KA2D described some new DX stations that can be heard. Tom reminded everyone that this is Marconi Week and there will be many commemorative stations on. Tom also described other contests and special events that are coming up.

 VE SESSIONS: The next VE session will be this Sunday, April 28. Help from VE’s is always needed and appreciated.

ARES/RACES: KA2RGI thanked everyone that helped out at recent events. Walter also noted several events that are coming up in May. KA2RGI will take pictures for ARES cards after the business meeting for anyone who needs one.

KA2D described a recent trip he made to Albany with several section and district officials. Several hams were presented with commendations from the state senate for the assistance they gave following the Sept. 11 tragedy.

 HEALTH & WELFARE: KA2UJP is currently in Good Sam hospital. N2NQQ gave information on John’s phone number, room number, etc.

 FIELD DAY: KA2RGI says there should be an adequate number of computers available for logging. Discussion followed. Donations of equipment need to be verified. The May meeting will be for Field Day planning and discussion.

 PARTIES, PICNICS, & SPECIAL EVENTS: Rep. Steve Israel will give a talk on May 29.
A special event station will be set up at the Air Power Museum on June 8 & 9.
GSBARC will have an information table set up at the USPS open house to be held on June 30. Help will be needed for this event.
Lighthouse Weekend is scheduled for Aug. 17 & 18. We will be set up at Fire Island Lighthouse.
The annual GSBARC picnic will be held in the park next to town hall on August 24. The picnic chairman is KA2RGI. 

NEW BUSINESS: KA2D has QSL cards available for the K2U special event station at the NWS open house.

OTHER BUSINESS: We are still waiting to hear from the managers of the Great South Bay mall for permission to hold an outdoor hamfest in the rear parking lot.  

A motion to adjourn was made by KC2FBV and seconded by N2NGE. Meeting was adjourned at 8:47 PM.

 The 50/50 pool was won by K2JY. Amount was $15. Steve donated his winning back to the club.
