PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE : April 2002
Welcome to the compass on line. As you can see from our site
there are many interesting links you can surf. Any comments
about the compass are welcome and encouraged.

The April meeting will be a discussion on our repeater system
Walt KA2RGI will be the moderator. Please bring questions to
the meeting and the repeater committee will answer them.

This year Spin KC2EGK will again be our Field Day Coordinator,
please give him the support he needs to make FD 2002 a great
success. Spin is also our apparel person and has placed an T-shirt
order for Field Day and the Fire Island Lighthouse . The T-shirts
will be available at the April General meeting to purchase them. Do
not fear we will be placing an additional order in May.

A tech class has started on Tuesday's at 7:30 PM, which will run until
mid April.

An Extra class has starting on Wednesday's at 7:30 PM Doug KB2SIE
is the class instructor.

DUES :
Dues renewal is $ 25.00 per year. Tom KA2D will be collecting dues at GSBARC meetings .
You may also mail in your dues to the club PO Box. When renewing your membership it is
important to update any change of your personal information such as a new address,
phone number, call sign, license class, ARRL membership, and e-mail address.

CLUB APPAREL:

KC2EGK has shirts and lightweight jackets than can be ordered with or without embroidered
club logo, name or call sign. These items are available in various colors. Spin also has a supply
of club hats and T shirts

MINUTES OF BOARD MEETING

Thursday March 7, 2002 The regular meeting date was changed due to Passover.

TREASURER'S REPORT:KA2D reported on the balances of GSBARC accounts.

MEMBERSHIP:127 Total (107 full paid, 11 family, 9 complimentary) There was discussion about the best way to
notify members that their dues are due, now that the Compass is no longer mailed to everyone. KA2D suggested that
in the future, dues renewals should close in February. For this year it will still close in April. A letter will be sent out
to all members reminding them that dues are now due. KA2D says about 50% of the membership have paid their dues
for 2002.

CORRESPONDENCE:
Several dues renewals, several QSL cards.

NETS:
2 Meter - good check ins this week.
10 Meter – good check ins this week.
Swap n Shop – The usual number of check ins.

EDUCATION:
The Technician class has started, with 8 students, and is off to a good start. The class will run for 8 weeks and will try for the April VE session. The Extra class starts on 3/20, with KB2SIE as instructor.

GUEST SPEAKERS AND PROGRAMS:

There are no speakers scheduled at this time. Everyone is encouraged to suggest speakers for future meetings. N2MUN feels we should have something entertaining at each general meeting. The May meeting will be for Field Day discussion and training.

COMPASS: N2MUN says the March edition is almost ready. There was discussion about the best format to use, and who will need the Compass mailed to them.

WEB PAGE: KA2D says the page has been updated with the latest club happenings.

CLUB STATION & EQUIPMENT: NY6DX still has the equipment used at HRU. The RTTY indicator has been sold, and the check made out to GSBARC.

LIBRARY: WA2UJI reports nothing is new.

APPAREL: KC2EGK is working on getting shirts for field day and the lighthouse weekend. N2MUN suggested we order 12 of each. The date will be left out so that the design can be used for future events. WA2QAV suggested the lighthouse weekend shirt use the same design as the shirts the lighthouse uses. Discussion followed. N2MUN and KC2EGK will go to the printer and discuss prices, etc. It was agreed that the price should be $10 - $15. What sizes should be ordered was discussed.

REPEATERS: WA2QAV asked about what is involved moving the 440 repeater to town hall when the new tower is ready. N2MUN will ask KA2RGI to do a presentation at the April meeting about the repeaters and what needs to be done.  KA2D says the site at Good Sam should not be abandoned. The 220 repeater will remain there.  N2MUN reminded everyone that the mission this year is to get a good working 2 meter repeater.

DX & CONTESTING: KA2D described the sideband contest that was held last week. Tom also described upcoming DX stations that will be heard and contests that will be held. There will be many DXpeditions during March. Conditions are currently good. Tom reminded everyone that the DX report is presented each week on the Monday night 2 meter net.

VE SESSIONS: The next VE session is scheduled for 3/24. N2MUN will be the liaison. Good VE support is needed.

ARES/RACES: Several upcoming ARES events were discussed.

HEALTH & WELFARE: The mother of AB2JW has passed away. KC2FBV will send a sympathy card to Jim.

FIELD DAY 2002: KC2EGK will be the coordinator for Field Day 2002. There was discussion about what equipment will be available. We will probably run as 5A. There was also discussion about having enough operators and computers for logging.

NEW BUSINESS: There will be a special event station set up at the Air Power Museum in Farmingdale on June 8 & 9. The board discussed how this will be handled and how publicity will be done. Starting in April, Newsday will have announcements about upcoming GSBARC events, meetings, etc.

OTHER BUSINESS: KC2EGK and WA2QAV were thanked for helping to run the GSBARC table at the recent LIMARC hamfest.

A motion to adjourn was made by KC2EGK and seconded by WA2QAV. The meeting was adjourned at 9:25 PM

MINUTES:

A motion was made by N2FIF and seconded by KA2DZR to accept the minutes of the previous meeting as printed in the Compass.

TREASURER'S REPORT:KA2D reported on the balances of GSBARC accounts. These figures will not be published in the web
version of the Compass. The Recording Secretary will have these figures available in his copy of the minutes.

MEMBERSHIP:
Dues renewal period for 2002 will end on April 1.

CORRESPONDENCE:Bank statement, qsl’s for K2U, newsletters from RCARC and LARC, and an announcement for the USPS open house to be held on June 30. N2MUN gave details of this event.

NETS:
2 Meter - some problems continue due to the repeater.
10 Meter – this net is free flowing, with no fixed format. All are welcomed to participate. If N2NGE is not available, anyone can take over as net control.

Swap n Shop – This net is held on Tuesdays, at 7:30PM.

EDUCATION:
The technician class has 8 students. The extra class has 2 students and is being taught by KB2SIE.

GUEST SPEAKERS AND PROGRAMS:
March - There was a presentation on satellites at tonight’s meeting.
April – KA2RGI will give a presentation on repeaters.
May – Field Day discussion.

COMPASS:
The Compass is now available on the club web site. In the future, there will be links to other interesting sites, articles, etc.

WEB PAGE: KA2D says the page has been updated with the latest club news. The Compass is now on the web page.

CLUB STATION & EQUIPMENT:

Some old equipment has been sold at a recent LIMARC hamfest. N2MUN thanked everyone involved in this effort.

LIBRARY:WA2UJI reports nothing is new.

APPAREL: KC2EGK says there are still some club hats available. Spin described the effort to get t-shirts for field day and
lighthouse weekend. The cost will be about $10 each. Spin took preliminary orders for these shirts.

REPEATERS: The new tower should be up and working in about 2 months. In a message sent to N2MUN, KA2RGI asked everyone to be patient. The same repeater shack will be used. There was discussion about whether the old repeater should be repaired, or a new repeater purchased.

In the near future, MetroCor will give a presentation on their role in repeater frequency coordination for this area.

DX & CONTESTING: KA2D described current and upcoming Dxpeditions. Tom reminded everyone that DX highlights are read each week on the Monday night club net. Upcoming contests were also described.

VE SESSIONS: The next VE session is scheduled for 3/24. N2MUN will be the liaison. Good VE support is needed.

ARES/RACES: The Suffolk County Half Marathon will be held on April 14. Help is needed for this event. KA2RGI needs a list of people who would like Skywarn training, both beginner and advanced.  ARES cards for 2002 are available and are being distributed.

HEALTH & WELFARE: KC2AUX, PattiLynn is in the hospital.  AB2JW, Jim, is visiting from his home upstate. He thanked everyone for the condolences he received for his recent loss. Jim has recently written a book entitled "Murder Before the Checkers" which will be  available soon.

KC2EGL, Mike, has been heard from and is doing OK

FIELD DAY: Per KC2EGK, field day will be run as 5A this year. Help will be needed especially for set up and take down. N2PLT, George, will bring the Boy Scouts again this year to help.

NEW BUSINESS: There will be a special event station set up at the Air Power Museum in Farmingdale on June 8 & 9. N2MUN gave details. The sponsors would like us to bring some old vintage radio equipment to demonstrate, in addition to having a special event station set up.

The 50/50 drawing was won by N2NQQ, JoAnn. The prize was $13.
