Fire Island Lighthouse, Fire Island National  Seashore, Fire Island New York

As part of Lighthouse/Lightship Activity Weekend, members of the Great South Bay ARC,  Islip ARES Group and Suffolk County Radio Club operated from the Fire Island Lighthouse, ref #670 (IOTA NA-026, USA NY-013-S), Aug 21 and 22 1999, signing W2GSB/Lighthouse. The W2GSB/LH crew enjoyed working you. The setup was 3 HF stations, a VHF/UHF FM voice station and a VHF packet station connected to the local DX Cluster N2TX in Bay Shore, NY. W2GSB/LH used a 40 ft Tower with a 3 element TriBand Yagi, R5 and a 160-40 meter  "Carolina Windom" for HF along with two VHF/UHF verticals for VHF/UHF.

W2GSB participated in the North American QSO Party Saturday August 21 from 1800 UTC to August 22 until 0600 August 22 with George N2GA at the mic while W2GSB/LH also operated on the WARC bands.

The 1999 W2GSB/Lighthouse netted 1046 contacts with 20 Lighthouse/Lightship QSOs in 47 US States, 7 Canadian Provinces,  and 23 Countries.

This operation is dedicated to the memory of Rich Tygar AC2P <SK>. Rich was the leader of operating Special Event Stations from interesting sites on Long Island such as AC2P and AC2P/200 Montauk Point Lighthouse, AC2P/p LI Air Show and AC2P and W4Z Jewish Arts Festival of Long Island.

Lighthouse/Lightship Activity Weekend for Y2K will be August 19 -20, 2000

A special thank you to the Fire Island Light Preservation Society, Fire Island Light staff and Fire Island National Seashore for their gracious hospitality and for the opportunity to operate Amateur Radio from Fire Island Lighthouse.

Lighthouse/Lightship Activity Weekend was developed in 1997 covering North and South America, Europe and South Africa. During the weekend a total of 36 stations were established at lighthouses and lightships in 14 countries over the weekend 23/24 August 1997.  This event is NOT a contest, each station decides how they will operate their station regards modes and bands.

August 1998 when radio amateurs of the world joined in the fun of the weekend by establishing stations at 151 lighthouses, lightships or maritime lights in 38 countries. Stations were QRV in Europe, North and South America, Africa, Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

International Lighthouse/Lightship Weekend 1999 was from 0001 UTC on Saturday 21 August until 2359 UTC on Sunday 22 August 1999.
