K2EAX - 50 YEARS IN AMATEUR RADIO
William (Clem) Query, K2EAX celebrates his "Golden Anniversary" as an Amateur Radio operator.
Clem Query was
a young soldier in the US Army Quartermaster Corps stationed in the South
Pacific during WWII when he was introduced to HF radio by a group of New
Zealand Navy friends. After the service, while working in the Quincy Point,
MA pharmacy, Ernie Smith W1PKQ encouraged Clem to study for his Amateur Radio
license. Ernie and Clem started construction on a 75-watt CW transmitter
with 6V6, 6L6 and an 807 final while studying his morse code and theory.
Clem passed his test and was licensed in 1948 as W1RAD. Clem added a Hallicrafter
receiver to his station and got on the air using a long wire antenna. One
of his first contacts was with a ham in Australia. He was hooked! Clem W1RAD
was an active member in the Springfield ARC, sharing his radio time Dxing
and volunteering his time as a local coordinator for Civil Defense on 10
meters.
In 1952 Clem moved to Poughkeepsie, NY and received his "two-land" call sign, K2EAX. During his time on the HF bands, Clem worked Harry Harmsworth G3ACQ. Harry and Clem have become life long friends. Harry and Clem have never had an eyeball QSO, but have maintained a daily schedule since 1953 to present. Clem moved to Huntington, NY where he was a member of the Larkfield Amateur Radio Club splitting his time between HF and VHF. Before moving to his home in Lindenhurst, Clem and his wife lived the West Babylon Harbor Club Apartments. Now K-MART and OFFICE-MAX.
Clem has been a member of Great South ARC for many years. He has served on the Executive Board of GSBARC. He is a member of the Town of Babylon ARES and Suffolk County RACES program and is a past TOB ARES EC. K2EAX is very Amateur Radio active on HF and VHF. He participates in the 75 meter Central New England Net, maintains his sked with Harry G3ACQ On 20,17 or 15 meters , checks into the East Coast Amateur Radio Service net (ECARS) on 40 meters and then like to RAG-CHEW with DX stations as his daily morning exercise. Later in the day in participates in the 4PMers 75 meter net as a check-in and also does duty as a Net Control Station. Clem is still as enthusiastic about Amateur Radio in 1998 as he was in 1948.
Congratulations
to Clem K2EAX
for 50yrs of dedication to Amateur Radio.
